In this episode of the HerStory Podcast, host Kylie King sits down with the 2025 ALIBI Award winner for Enduring Brilliance, Julie Ross. As the owner of Angelic Inspirations in Canberra, Julie has spent nearly 14 years transforming an existing business into a national award-winning bridal and formal wear boutique.

Julie opens up about the “midlife crisis” that led her from a career in airline HR to purchasing a rundown shop that was half-bridal and half-candles. She discusses the grit required to survive the early years with just $1,000 in the bank and how she navigated the challenges of COVID-19 by thinking outside the box with “honesty system” home fittings. Above all, Julie emphasises that while products matter, the true “secret sauce” to business longevity is exceeding customer expectations and building emotional connections that span generations – from year 10 formal dresses to wedding gowns.

What You’ll Learn in Episode 70

  • The reality of bridal shopping: navigating the nerves and anxiety of customers rather than “bridezillas.”

  • Why business longevity often depends on finding a point of difference through exceptional customer service.

  • The “Under-promise and Over-deliver” strategy: why Julie adds two weeks to dress due dates to create a positive surprise.

  • How to pivot a business from a confused brand identity to a focused, modern boutique.

  • Strategies for managing cash flow when dealing with high-cost inventory like wedding dresses.

  • Why Julie stopped hiring for “retail experience” and started hiring for warmth, friendliness, and rapport-building.

  • The power of award recognition and how it builds immediate credibility with new clients.

  • Why staying “small and warm” in a local boutique can be more successful than expanding into a massive, intimidating space.

  • Expert dress tips: why you should never choose a dress based on logic, but on how it makes you feel in the mirror.

Guest: Julie Ross

Hello, my name is Julie Ross and I am the very proud owner of a gorgeous little bridal boutique located in Canberra; Angelic Inspirations.

I am 57 years old, the Mum of two lovely teenage daughters and wife to a wonderful and ridiculously supportive husband, Matthew. I fondly describe the purchase of Angelic Inspirations as the best midlife crisis I have ever had! At the time the business was advertised, I was on maternity leave and looking for a career change.

I happened to stumble across the advertisement and began thinking, ‘What if…?’ The move was a big change for me but perfect for my 15 years’ experience in management, retail and customer service roles with Qantas and over 10 years’ experience in training and HR.

With two littlies under 2, I knew I didn’t want to go back into the corporate world and I had always wanted to work for myself. The shop was local to me and had real sentimental value – I’d bought my own wedding dress there.

At age 45, I took the plunge and bought the shop, telling myself I would give it a red hot crack for five years and then reassess. We are now in our 12th year of operation and I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER….

Our business philosophy is centred on customer service. Rather than simply selling a dress, our goal is to create a positive, enjoyable experience for our customers. Our quaint, unpretentious boutique is designed to make our customers feel comfortable and welcome. In our experience, by delivering on exceptional customer service, customers return for other products or services or provide referrals down the track. This is achieved through our carefully designed customer service processes, which include surprising our customers with champagne on arrival and gifting them a specially designed ‘I Said Yes to My Dress’ cookie on the placing of an order. Also key is our individual appointments in our private fitting rooms, with each bride promised a one on one fitting with one of our consultants and a room to themselves for their entire appointment.
