In Episode 53 of the HerStory Podcast, Kylie King sits down with Davina Borrow-Jones from The Mumpreneur Lawyer to talk about the legal foundations every small business needs (before something goes wrong).

Davina shares what she saw firsthand while representing small businesses in court and why being proactive with your contracts, policies, and business structure can save you massive stress, money, and drama later. You’ll also hear a practical conversation about the risks of relying on AI-generated legal documents, what “legal confidence” actually looks like in negotiations, and the one thing Davina says is a red flag if you’re already trading.

If you’ve been putting your Terms & Conditions, privacy policy, or client agreements in the “I’ll do it later” pile – this episode is your friendly (but firm) kick in the pants to protect what you’re building.

What You’ll Learn in Episode 53

  • The legal basics every business should have in place (and why it depends on your industry)

  • Why contracts protect both you and your clients (and prevent disputes escalating)

  • The key website documents most businesses need (T&Cs, privacy policy, website terms)

  • Why legal foundations give you confidence to negotiate even with bigger organisations

  • What can go wrong when you rely on AI for legal documents (and how to use tech safely)

  • Why longevity in business is a major achievement and how legal systems support that

  • A simple next step to reduce risk and tighten your operations fast

Guest: Davina Borrow-Jones

I’m Davina, Founder at The Mumpreneur Lawyer. We help women protect their businesses from legal risk with customised legal documents, reviews and trademarks.

The Mumpreneur Lawyer was inspired by the many women I came across who were unable to find quality legal expertise and the many women who experienced lawyers who were unable to translate complex legal issues into understandable form. It was also inspired by the women who have had to go through their own expensive, and emotionally draining legal battles in courts.

I knew if I could provide simple, flexible legal solutions for women, particularly at the startup stage, they would be empowered for the future success of their businesses.

I have over 20 years legal experience working for Australian and US law firms, and hold a Masters of Law from the University of Technology, Sydney, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Performance Studies from the University of Sydney.
