In this episode of the HerStory Podcast, Kylie King sits down with Rebecca Wakeham, an educational consultant and the founder of The Dyslexic Clinic. With over 20 years of experience in early childhood and primary education, Rebecca shares the pivotal moment during the 2020 lockdowns when she realised that even as a qualified teacher, she lacked the specific strategies needed to help a friend’s dyslexic child. This realisation sparked a journey of intensive training in the yoshimoto Orton Gillingham approach and the eventual launch of her own specialized clinic.

Rebecca discusses the critical shortage of trained tutors and how she is bridging the gap through one-on-one online support and her upcoming programs, “Reading Readiness” and “The Code Program.” She opens up about the challenges of being a private person stepping into the spotlight for the sake of her mission and the incredible reward of giving children (and their parents) hope and a lifelong path to literacy. From achieving a 95% retention rate to supporting remote students across Australia, Rebecca’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of finding and filling a vital niche.

Guest: Rebecca Wakeham

I am an Educational Consultant specialising in dyslexia support. I help children aged 6-16 struggling with reading and spelling to gain confidence and develop life-long literacy skills – even if they’ve been reluctant learners in the past!

I do this through 1-on-1 online tutoring and I am about to launch a group coaching program to equip parents with practical resources and know-how so they can help their dyslexic child despite their busy schedules and without needing in-depth knowledge about the English language.
